The Wilfley dynamic seal provides for zero leakage without the need for costly mechanical seals, packing, or lip seals, and their associated seal water and costly seal water systems.

  • Product dilution from seal / flushing water for mechanical seals and packing is eliminated.
  • The Wilfley dynamic seal or “hydrodynamic seal” is achieved by a combination of the vanes on the rear of the impeller and/or an expeller located behind the impeller.
  • When these rotate they cause the liquid to centrifugally move away from where the shaft meets the pump case.
  • Equilibrium is achieved between the pressure of the liquid and the atmosphere, which creates an air void while the pump is operating.
  • At pump shutdown, a static seal engages to prevent product leakage when the pump is stopped.
  • Wilfley dynamic seals can offer reliable service in the most difficult applications:
    • varying amounts of solids
    • Liquids close to saturation and prone to crystallizing
    • Scaling solutions
    • Upset conditions exist like cavitation, dead heading and when dry running operation can occur.

  • Since there are no internal rubbing components during operation, the dynamic seal isn’t affected by shaft deflections that are detrimental to mechanical seals.

Did you know that 1 gallon/minute (3.78 liters/minute) of seal water adds up to 525,600 gallons / year (1,986,768 liters / year)?
